Texas State Park Celebration

The Texas State Parks are celebrating their centennial anniversary! In partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, longtime advocate George Bristol has written Texas State Parks: The First 100 Years, 1923-2023, to explore the history of one of Texas’s most treasured assets.

Texas leaders emerged throughout this hundred-year history to enable a parks system for all, and to lend their names and reputations to the causes of conservation and preservation.

Author George Bristol received a presidential appointment to the National Parks Foundation, launching a new journey after successful careers in politics and business. He established the Texas Coalition for Conservation in 2001 and began an eighteen-year effort that culminated in the people of Texas overwhelmingly voting to direct all revenue generated from the Sporting Good Sales Tax to State Parks as originally intended—a move that would secure reliable funding for the maintenance and preservation of Texas’s most awesome public assets.
